REVIEWS

Critical Acclaim

CLOTILDE (NORMA: BELLINI) OCTOBER 2018

Chelsea Opera Group review Planet Hughill

“Clotilde is a tiny but important role (when Callas first sang Norma at Covent Garden, Clotilde was the young Joan Sutherland), and her two dialogues with Norma are crucial to the drama. Claire Pendleton is a familiar name as she is a member of the chorus of English National Opera where she also sings solo roles, and it was lovely to see her stepping into the limelight. She made Clotilde count both musically and dramatically, without ever taking the limelight. “ Planet Hughill

FIDO (PAUL BUNYAN - BRITTEN) ALLY PALLY MAY 2019

review from MusicOMH

The cast is extremely strong, and one of the delights is getting to hear several members of the ENO Chorus in solo roles, with Claire Pendleton as Fido being one of many who stands out.

LUISA MILLER (VERDI) ENGLISH NATIONAL OPERA

MARCH 2020

…His daughter Luisa sung by Elizabeth Llewellyn – good to see her back at ENO...Her friend Laura should have been sung by the ENO Harewood Artist Nadine Benjamin, but she was unwell and it was delightful to hear her understudy from the chorus Claire Pendleton sing the role …

I am delighted to have the opportunity of singing Clotilde in Norma for the fantastic Chelsea Opera Group - a long held ambition. I am even more delighted to be singing in such an iconic opera as Bellini's extraordinary 'Norma'.

Chelsea Opera Group - Saturday 27 October 2018, 7.00pm

Chelsea Opera Group and Orchestra Bellini: Norma; Vincenzo Bellini

Venue: Cadogan Hall

Chelsea Opera Group Chorus and Orchestra

Helena Dix - Norma

Elin Pritchard - Adalgisa

Claire Pendleton - Clotilde

Christopher Turner - Pollione

Joshua Bloom - Oroveso

Dane Lam - conductor

Bellini’s Norma is an outstanding example of the bel canto genre. First produced in 1831, it is set in Roman-occupied Gaul around 50 B.C. The story is centred on a struggle between love and duty, resulting from the illicit passion of the local arch-druidess Norma for the Roman proconsul Pollione. Norma is one of opera’s greatest soprano roles and has been particularly associated with Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland. Casta Diva, Norma’s invocation to the moon, is one of the best-known arias in all opera. It is one of the composer’s ‘long, long melodies’ which Verdi much admired. Sung in Italian with English surtitles. 5.45pm: Pre-concert talk for ticket holders by Ditlev Rindom.

VOICE - TEACHING

A Holistic Approach

My teaching work is largely based on my experience as an opera singer, both as a freelance soloist & member of English National Opera's award-winning Chorus.

  • I have taught singing, privately for over fifteen years.

  • The exercises & warm up techniques I use are based on the bel canto style of singing & study, which help improve & create a solid technique.

  • I also help singers with vocal problems.

  • Singing should be an enjoyable experience and I always manage to have fun with pupils.

  • The atmosphere is relaxed, which helps achieve the right results.

  • Singing benefits us physically & mentally and can help with good posture, strengthening lung power & general fitness, which triggers confidence.

  • I have also coached people who speak in public, to a large audience.

  • Projection, breathing & support is key to a good vocal health.

  • Every lesson is adapted for the individual pupil.

  • My teaching is a suitable & healthy approach to all kinds of singing styles.

  • I teach mainly classical singers; children, young adults, keen amateurs & professionals. I have some musical theatre and pop singing pupils but I've yet to teach a rock star!

I studied at Birkbeck College  & Trinity College of Music in London, before starting a successful career as an opera singer, then also becoming a singing teacher. I have also run workshops & masterclasses for children & young adults, as well as being engaged as a specialist music in education animateur.

I teach at my home in Surrey as well as in London.
